| Requirements Engineering Requirements Engineering (RE) is the most important part of a trilogy of activities referred to collectively as Requirements Handling. The other two are Requirements Capture and Requirements Management. Without RE there can be no confidence that what is being specified is fit for purpose. RE is the process of developing and ensuring quality in a body of requirements throughout the life of any project. It involves the methodical application of scientific techniques in order to control the quality of the overall requirement in a measurable manner. RE is an intellectually demanding and painstaking activity, based upon the principles of Information Engineering, which requires considerable skill and experience to be applied. For complex requirements, the requirements engineer needs to be able to apply a sound methodology and be supported by a comprehensive suite of tools which embodies appropriate functionality, including meaningful metrics. In this respect RE is no different from any other engineering discipline.
